Renowned writer Kaya Oakes delivers the 2019-20 Pope John XXIII lecture on the topic, "Spiritual Autobiography and the Search for Self."
Drawing on her experience of writing her own memoir, "Radical Reinvention," about her return as an adult to the Catholic Church despite her own frustration with many aspects of contemporary Catholicism, Oakes will speak about spiritual autobiography as an important literary genre.
Oakes, who teaches nonfiction writing at the University of California, Berkeley, is the author of four books, most recently including "The Nones Are Alright" and "Radical Reinvention." Her essays have appeared in The New Republic, Slate, The Guardian, National Catholic Reporter, Religion Dispatches, The Washington Post, and many other publications.
The Pope John XXIII Lecture was founded in the 1980s by the late Dr. Virgil Gianelli, one of the founders of St. Mary’s Dining Hall. The series brings prominent speakers to the Stockton campus to address significant contemporary issues from a Catholic perspective.
