International House at UC Berkeley, 2299 Piedmont Ave, Berkeley, CA 94720
Members of the university community are invited to this celebration of life for Estelle Pau-On Lau, who was a professor of education in the Gladys L. Benerd School of Education from 1977–2000, specializing in multi-cultural education and women's studies. She passed away May 11, 2019 at the age of 95.
Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP for planning purposes.
Lau began her career at Pacific teaching a doctoral seminar designed to help students choose and develop a topic for their dissertations. One of her teaching techniques was to have the student write down their topic and then ask them, “So what? Why is it important that you should study this or that other people should know about it?” At the end of one semester, her students took her out to breakfast and presented her with a license plate that read, “Dr. Lau says, “So what?”
In addition to doctoral seminars, Lau taught multicultural and Asian studies, helping to prepare future teachers to enter classrooms in Stockton with high populations of students from Cambodia, Vietnam and other cultures.
In 2000, Lau was awarded the prestigious Order of Pacific for her outstanding contributions to Pacific. She was a graduate of UC Berkeley, University of Chicago, and Marquette University.
She is survived by her son Bradford Gaffney of San Rafael, CA; daughter Ann Gaffney Shores, son-in-law Tom Shores and granddaughter Meredith Shores of Corte Madera, CA; son Stuart Gaffney and son-in-law John Lewis of San Francisco, CA; and many loving family and friends.
