School of International Studies Professor Daniel O'Neill will discuss how China has become increasingly aggressive in asserting its vast territorial claims in its surrounding waters, most notably over islands in the South China Sea, some little more than reefs and rocks. Many of these are also claimed by Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan. An unintended consequence of China’s assertiveness has been to push several of these countries toward closer cooperation with the United States.
This timely topic will allow us to examine the rise of China, China’s power projection, and the balance of power in Southeast Asia.
