During the Second World War, the Japanese Army was highly influenced by the traditions of the samurai. As the conflict became more desperate, the ideals of the samurai became even stronger, in particular, the idea of self-sacrifice. This lecture by history professor George Yagi will explore the mentality of the Japanese soldier and the reasons why many chose to fight to the death rather than surrender.
